La CMS a le plaisir de présenter l'étude juridique "Evaluation juridique de la mise en œuvre de la Convention sur les espèces migratrices et de l'Accord Gorilla au Cameroun et au Nigeria" pour deux espèces répertoriées, le gorille de la rivière Cross (Gorilla gorilla diehli) et le chimpanzé du Nigeria et du Cameroun (Pan troglodytes ellioti). Cette étude a été préparée par Legal Atlas et rendue possible grâce à un généreux financement du ministère fédéral allemand de l'environnement, obtenu via le Partenariat pour la survie des grands singes (GRASP).

La République d’Angola a rejoint l’Accord sur la conservation des gorilles et de leurs habitats, également connu sous le nom d’Accord Gorilla. L’Angola est le huitième des dix États de l’aire de répartition des gorilles à devenir partie à l’Accord, rejoignant ainsi la République centrafricaine, le Congo (Brazzaville), la République démocratique du Congo (Kinshasa), le Gabon, le Nigéria, le Rwanda et l’Ouganda. L’adhésion de l’Angola à l’Accord Gorilla a pris effet le 1er janvier 2021.

Le nombre d'adhérents à la CMS atteint 131 avec la ratification de la Convention par la République centrafricaine.

Les experts ont conclu que les grands singes pouvaient également être touchés par le COVID-19. Le Groupe de spécialistes de la santé des espèces sauvages de l'UICN et le Groupe de spécialistes des primates de l'UICN soulignent tous deux que, bien qu’aucun cas de grands singes n'ait été signalé, on peut raisonnablement estimer qu'ils seraient sensibles au COVID-19. Des études antérieures ont montré que les grands singes peuvent être infectés par des agents pathogènes respiratoires humains. Le gorille et le chimpanzé sont protégés par la Convention sur les espèces migratrices.

The Third Meeting of the Parties of the Gorilla Agreement held from 18 to 20 June 2019 in Entebbe, Uganda highlighted the urgent need to conserve gorillas. Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, Senior Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Government of Uganda, said: “Conservation of gorillas is a moral, constitutional, cultural and economic imperative.”

The GRASP Executive Committee held its annual meeting at UNESCO headquarters in Paris from 2 to 3 May 2019, sponsored and co-chaired by the Government of France. As an Executive Committee member, the CMS Secretariat attended the meeting. The CMS Secretariat, together with the GRASP Secretariat, presented a proposal to strengthen cooperation between the Agreement on the Conservation of Gorillas and Their Habitats (Gorilla Agreement) and GRASP.

The African Ranger Award is presented annually, to a maximum of 50 recipients, who have been working in protected areas for the protection of African wildlife. This 10-year Award Programme was set up in July 2017 by Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba and co-chair of Paradise International Foundation to support 500 wildlife rangers in Africa.
